Bone Marrow Donor Sought for 24 Year Old Atlanta Woman

ATLANTA – An appeal is being made to members of Georgia’s Asian community to attend a “Cure Sonia” bone marrow donor registration drive in hopes of finding a donor match for 24-year-old Sonia Rai who has acute myelogenous leukemia.

Compatible genetic matches for bone marrow transplants typically are found among members of the same or similar racial or ethnic groups. At present one percent of National Marrow Donor Program registrants are of South Asian heritage. Given Sonia’s genetic profile, which is a hybrid of Southeast Asian and Caucasian, there is a very strong possibility that she will find a match with people from India, Hawaii, Philippines, Pakistan, Burma, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Australia.

Between Fri. Jan. 28 and Weds. Feb 2, nine “Cure Sonia” drives will be held in Athens and the Atlanta metro area including on the campuses of Emory, Georgia Tech, Southern Polytechnic State University, and the University of Georgia.
