CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Students from the SCORE program at Fountain Elementary School took on a Native American study, "The Powwow," and earned a trip to the Native American Festival at Stone Fountain Park.
The study teaches students about the Powwow in the Native American culture, and the traditions practiced among families, communities and other countries.
To win the trip, Fountain Students took part in a contest sponsored by Stone Mountain Park to encourage creative writing and learning.
"I felt this was a great opportunity for students to engage in the writing process and have their writing evaluated by others outside of their school and county, while attempting to earn a complimentary full educational experience field trip," Camecia Akinlabi, Fountain Elementary gifted teacher, said.
Work submitted followed a format of short story, poem, essay, fiction, and had to be less than 500 words. Akinlabi said students were thrilled that their pieces won the trip. Fountain's contest work included a report, short story, power point and two poems.
