Student wins international art contest

RIVERDALE – (submitted by The Clayton County Daily View) Art students at Pointe South Middle won first place in the Istanbul Art and Essay Contest sponsored by the Istanbul Center, United Nations Secretariat, and the Georgia Department of Education.

Maurel Denge, art teacher, in addition also announced that her group won first place in the whole Southeastern Region which includes  Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee, and an all expenses paid trip to Istanbul, Turkey. A second art student won ninth place.

They have been invited to a reception and awards ceremony at 4 p.m. Fricay, March 25, at Morehouse College's Executive Leadership Center, located at 830 Westview Drive, SW, Atlanta.

The awards ceremony will feature a keynote speech as well as recognition for each winning student.

"Jazz and Connect" Concert series

RIVERDALE – The inaugural Jazz and Connect concert will be held on March 4th and 5th, and every weekend after it at the Clarion Hotel. This event feature live performances by: Ted Shumate, Tina Fabrique, Alex Latttimore and Longineu Parsons.

The event starts with a mixer from 7-8 p.m. followed by live jazz at 8:00. The event is hosted by Diamond Roots Marketing, VJC Promotions, Tribal Records and the Clarion Hotel. The hotel is located at 6288 Old Dixie Road in Jonesboro.

JONESBORO – (CCPS) Celebrated author Sharon Flake will visit with students at North Clayton Middle School (NCMS) for Read Across America Day on Wednesday, March 2. Flake is noted for her stories that address the challenges African-American youth face as they transition through adolescence. Her finesse in connecting to the feelings and issues that surround students has made her books hugely popular.

Chairman Bell Wows Audience as Guest Ringmaster at UniverSoul Circus

RIVERDALE -- Clayton County Commissioner, Chairman Eldrin Bell, took on a different sort of leadership role Thursday night as the Guest Ringmaster for the world renowned UniverSoul Circus.  The show took place in the Green Parking Lot of Turner Field and will began at 7:30pm as Chairman Bell makes his grand entrance into the big top riding an African Elephant.

Bell explained that, “As a young man growing up in the segregated south I would never had envisioned such a world class production featuring performers that truly reflect the wonderful, universal society that we all exist in today. I am fulfilling a boyhood dream of mine.”

Although Bell is undergoing physical therapy; doctors checked into the process before he agreed to make his grand entrance as a guest ringmaster at the circus.

Located in Jonesboro, Arts Clayton is a non-profit community arts organization dedicated to enriching lives through the arts. The VIP fundraising event will take place Thursday, February 3, from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and 25 percent of donations made during the event will benefit Arts Clayton.

Rachael Ray to Sign Copies of  Look+Cook, 12p.m. until 2p.m.

Author Rachael Ray will be at the Southlake Barnes and Noble store in Morrow on Saturday, December 18. All Clayton County residents are invited to join her from noon until 2 p.m. for the signing of her new book, "Look+Cook."

The store, a Clayton County Public Schools Partner-in-Education, will have a special opening at 8 a.m. to begin handing out wristbands for the book signing.
