Kmart closes Athens store for final time

ATHENS, Ga. - The Kmart store in Athens along Barnett Shoals Road closed for the final time Sunday.

The store was among a list of 120 stores nationally that Kmart's parent, Sears Holdings, said late last year they would be shuttering nationwide. Locations in Douglasville, Jonesboro and on Cleveland Avenue in Atlanta have already closed.

Thousands of new jobs for Forest Park?

FOREST PARK, Ga. -- One of metro Atlanta's most economically depressed communities just got some great news.

Nestled just below Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Clayton County city of Forest Park has the area's highest unemployment rate, at just under 12 percent.

It also has the lowest per capita income, just under $15,000 a year.

But now this struggling town is getting word that it could possibly get thousands of new jobs.

"It's going to be incredible because these will be skilled jobs; these will not be just minimum wage jobs," said Fred Bryant, executive director of the Forest Park/Fort Gillem Local Redevelopment Authority.

For the past six years, he and the city of Forest Park have been working to lure companies into the now mostly vacant Fort Gillem Army base.

Closed by the government a few years ago to save taxpayers money, Ft. Gillem first opened in 1941 as a U.S. Army Supply Depot.

Dept. of Labor launches system to improve unemployment insurance

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor recently rolled out a new electronic system designed to increase efficiency and reduce costs of operating the state's unemployment insurance program.

Georgia is one of 10 states to adopt the State Information Data Exchange (SIDES) E-response. It allows employers to respond promptly to the Department of Labor when a former worker files an unemployment claim, according to state Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.

"This new online capability is part of our continuing effort to make the Georgia Department of Labor more user-friendly and technologically up-to-date," Butler said in a statement. "This will significantly speed communications between the labor department and employers. At the same time, it will help prevent some overpayments to people who might not be eligible for benefits, saving us from having to go back and try to collect money from ineligible applicants."

Sears announces 4 Metro Atlanta stores among those to close

ATLANTA (WXIA) -- At least four Metro Atlanta Kmart stores are among the 100 to 120 Sears and Kmart stores to close nationally, company officials revealed Thursday afternoon.

Sears Holdings initially announced the closings Tuesday, saying the closings were going to occur due to faltering sales during the holiday season.

In the information released Thursday, Sears Holdings announced closings for 79 locations, indicating that announcements of other closings would be forthcoming.

The company says same-store sales figures fell 5.2 percent in the eight weeks ending Christmas Day.  That came from a 4.4 percent drop in sales at Kmart stores and a 6 percent slide in sales at domestic Sears stores.
