Man charged with faking sniper report | Crime

JONESBORO, Ga. -- A man has been charged with fabricating an account of a sniper targeting Clayton County school buses, prompting a massive police response.

Jonesboro police said Codarrius Rayshun Brewer of Hampton was arrested after admitting that he made up the incident. He was charged with making a false report and obstruction. A phone listing for Brewer could not be located. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.

The Clayton County School superintendent issued the following statement:

"Although it is regretful that school officials, parents and students were subjected to the worry and inconvenience surrounding this incident, we are all relieved that the situation appears to be resolved.  School System Administrators are very grateful for the support we received from all our stakeholders including community members, school administrators and teachers and all public safety departments involved.  We will continue to make the safety of our students our first priority.  We want to especially thank Chief Greg Porter and his officers who took this matter so seriously and dedicated themselves to protecting our students and apprehending those who were allegedly involved.  We will all breathe a little easier knowing our students and employees are safe as the first day of school approaches." Police initially said a witness on May 14 saw a man aiming a rifle at a school bus. The witness claimed to have chased off the man.

Police now say Brewer placed the rifle and a note near the backyard fence.

More than 75 police officers were assigned to the case.
