Georgia Folklore by Moonlight at Stately Oaks Plantation

JONESBORO, GA -- Learn local legends while walking down a moonlit path on Saturday, Oct. 30 during Georgia Folklore by Moonlight at Stately Oaks Plantation (100 Carriage Lane at Jodeco Road, Jonesboro, 30236).

Sit on a bale of hay and be entertained by local musicians and entertainers before beginning a guided walk down a moonlit path filled with storytellers. Hear tales that chronicle local history, create belly laughs, give goosebumps and create wonder. It's an evening of entertainment for the entire family.

Georgia Folklore by Moonlight will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 11.

YOUNG, FIT and FLY at Riverdale High School, October 27th

On Wednesday, October 27that 8:30am, twin sisters Brandi and Karli Harvey, daughters of Steve Harvey will be hosting the YOUNG, FIT and FLY block party at Riverdale High School.

The sister’s mission is to “inspire, motivate and empower young women to push beyond social norms and take responsibility of their image, career, finances, health and overall wellness”. Through this organization they’ve inspired thousands of high school and college-aged girls to look at their lives and potential differently. 

Using an MTV DJ, Brandi and Karli will excite the crowd and tackle issues like including appropriate attire for success and how choices affect self esteem.    

Riverdale High School is located at 160 Roberts Drive in Riverdale. Admission to this event is free and it is open to all Riverdale High students.

 

Douglasville Kennel Club to Host Major Dog Show

DOUGLASVILLE, GA -- Residents of the Atlanta area will have the opportunity to see quality examples of almost 160 breeds of dogs at the Douglasville Kennel Club dog show on Friday, Oct. 22.

The show, which is expected to host around 2,000 dogs, will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with Best in Show judging to be held around 4:00 p.m. It will be held at the Atlanta Exposition Center South (3850 Jonesboro Road, Atlanta, 30354).

The Douglasville Kennel Club show is the first of a three-day cluster of shows held in conjunction with the Atlanta Kennel Club and the Newnan Kennel Club. This group of shows is among the most important in the Southeast and attracts exhibitors from across the United States, as well as Canada, Mexico and South America.

The judges in the competition come from as far away as Sweden to render their expert judgements of the dogs presented.

Riverdale Town Center Grand Opening

On October 9th, from 11 to 4 p.m. or 8 to 11 p.m., the City of Riverdale has never had a place to officially call downtown, but this will change, tonight.

The City of Riverdale will open it's new Town Center on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., located at 7210 Church Street. The City of Riverdale has constructed a new 21,00 sq. ft. City Hall Complex, a 42,000 sq ft center for Arts, Business and Lesiure Services, a public plaza with an interactive water feature with an interavtive water feature and a 1,00 seat amphitheater.

The grand opening event will kick-off with a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by muticultural performances and complex tours. At 8pm, a celebratory concert featuring musical performances by Bobby Brown, Miki Howard and the 911Band will take place in the city's New Amphitheatre. The Grand Opening Finale will include a spectacular fireworks show. A variety of food, merchandise and beverage vendors will be on site.

Kids Outdoor Festival at Clayton County International Park

Clayton County Parks and Recreation Department are hosting a day of family fun on Saturday, October 2, 2010. Whether you participate in the Third Annual Lake Spivey Road Race, sign up for the BBQ Competition, or just enjoy a day of outdoor activities, Clayton County International Park is offering a plethora of activities from 8:00a.m. until 4:00p.m.

Clayton County Charter School Still Accepting Applications

Scholars Academy has a new look for the new school year. Two weeks ago, students dressed in blue and yellow uniforms and gathered for their first day of class on the campus of Lakewin Christian Center (6649 Church Street, Riverdale).

Elsa R. Celestine, the school’s principal, states, "This is an exciting time for us. Going into our third year has been a very rewarding experience particularly after making annual yearly progress, last school year. We are excited about our new location and our teachers and staff will continue to offer the best education possible to our students."

Scholars Academy has no tuition or entrance fees. However, unlike traditional public schools, Scholars Academy does not limit enrollment to zoning or district areas. The Academy can enroll students in grades K-5 from anywhere within Clayton County. Limited Space is still available for kindergarten through fifth grade students.

Free Concert: Jason Bitten

On September 25th, the City of Jonesboro will host inspirational saxophonist Jason Bitten on the Jonesboro/Old Courthouse Lawn (South Main Street) for “Free Jazz on the Lawn”. Birmingham, Alabama native Jason started playing the saxophone at the age of 12 and has become a highly sought after talent.

Bitten has ministered at conferences, churches and jazz festivals in the United Kingdom, Caribbean Islands and throughout the United States and even appeared on the HGTV documentary, “A Salute to Preservation” featuring Ms. Coretta Scott King. A recipient of numerous community humanitarian awards, Bitten believes in impacting his community.
