The Walgreens Wellness Tour Comes To Newnan, Riverdale

The Walgreens Wellness Tour is coming to the Atlanta area, again. The Wellness Tour is a community outreach effort by Walgreens to provide free health screenings. This tour offer all adults 18 and over six free health screenings: bone density, cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, and waist circumference and body mass analysis.

No appointment is necessary; results are immediate and from start to finish all six screenings take around 20-25 minutes. The free screenings are conducted inside the “big red bus” and are valued at more than $140. Additionally, free one-year AARP memberships will be given to all adults who receive screenings.

On Thursday, January 20th, the bus will be located in the parking lot of Walgreens, located at 6665 Highway 85 in Riverdale from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. And on Friday, January 21st, the bus will be located in the parking lot of Walgreens at 3116 Highway 34 East from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Yoplait Today Teams Up With Tisha Campbell Martin for Riverdale Town Center Health Event

On Saturday, January 22nd, the Riverdale Town Center will be hosting a one-day health and wellness event sponsored by Yoplait and presented along with Radio One will take place at the Riverdale Town Center in Riverdale.The event will be held from noon until 5:00 p.m.

In an effort to encourage African-American women to take charge of their health by making beneficial food and lifestyle choices, Yoplait is teaming up with actress and singer Tisha Campbell Martin to roll out a new campaign, Yoplait Today.

The event will provide attendees useful information on healthy living via panel discussions and fitness demonstrations, while being able to enjoy Yoplait Light yogurt samples.  The event is also designed to further encourage people to make little changes today that can improve your overall health and wellness tomorrow.

The Riverdale Town Center is located at 7280 Church Street in Riverdale.

Forest Park Students are Schooled on Bullying and Gangs

After students at Forest Park Middle School (FPMS) completed a health unit on bullying and gangs that included various other activities, the health teachers at Forest Park Middle's Health & Physical Education Department wanted to provide an avenue for their students to show their work and to educate their peers. 

The teachers hosted a Bullying and Gangs Assembly for each grade level shortly before semester break that included an anti-bullying poster and slogan contest.

To connect students to the real world, the assembly included a  panel of guest ready to share various perspectives of the effects of bullying and gangs in schools.

Clayton County Offers $10 Flu Shot for National Flu Vaccination Week

In recognition of National Influenza Vaccination Week, which is December 5th – 11th, the Clayton County Board of Health-Express Flu clinic will be providing flu vaccinations at $10, just in time for flu season.

The Board of Health will be accepting the following types of insurance: Medicare, state-employed Cigna and United Healthcare.

Empire Beauty Schools Honor Breast Cancer Survivors

Although October has passed, Empire Beauty Schools are working to do their part to commemorate breast cancer survivors. On Tuesday, December 7th from 9:00 until 4:00 p.m. at different Empire Beauty School locations around Atlanta cancer survivors are invited to campus for a day of complimentary pampering as a part of the school’s participation in Cancer Survivor Beauty & Support Day (CSBSD).  

Men, women and children of any age will be treated to free hair and nail services on a day that is intended to make all cancer survivors feel supported and appreciated, and to get a much-needed break from their daily worries.

CSBSD has been recognized and acknowledged by several state and local governments, received an honorary proclamation in the House of Representatives and is supported by volunteers who work for hospitals, cancer clinics and cancer care organizations.

SPARC at the Frank Bailey Senior Center, October 29th

C-Tran may be a thing of the past but Clayton County’s plan to promote wellness is here to stay. On October 29th, at the Frank Bailey Senior Center (6213 Riverdale Road, Riverdale), the Clayton County Senior Services Department are hosting “Sickness Prevention Achieved through Regional Collaboration” (SPARC).

Seniors aged 55 and older are invited to take advantage of flu, tetanus and pneumonia shots, blood pressure, foot, and cholesterol screenings, along with mammography scheduling.

SPARC is an evidence base program that works in partnership with community organizations and healthcare providers to promote disease prevention by providing screenings and immunizations in places that are convenient for senior citizens, it likes to act as a “one stop shop for wellness”.

There will be lots of give-a-ways, door prizes, fruits and vegetables for attendees.

YOUNG, FIT and FLY at Riverdale High School, October 27th

On Wednesday, October 27that 8:30am, twin sisters Brandi and Karli Harvey, daughters of Steve Harvey will be hosting the YOUNG, FIT and FLY block party at Riverdale High School.

The sister’s mission is to “inspire, motivate and empower young women to push beyond social norms and take responsibility of their image, career, finances, health and overall wellness”. Through this organization they’ve inspired thousands of high school and college-aged girls to look at their lives and potential differently. 

Using an MTV DJ, Brandi and Karli will excite the crowd and tackle issues like including appropriate attire for success and how choices affect self esteem.    

Riverdale High School is located at 160 Roberts Drive in Riverdale. Admission to this event is free and it is open to all Riverdale High students.
