RIVERDALE | 9-year-old in critical condition after being shot | News

RIVERDALE, Ga. (WXIA) -- A 9-year-old girl was reported in critical but stable condition at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston Friday night. She was shot in the abdomen at a home in Riverdale Friday afternoon.

Police said the girl was shot by a 19-year-old woman who was handling the gun at a home on Steepleridge Court at about 4:30 Friday afternoon. The teen was later identified as Rachel Holliday Burrell.

Investigators said the girl was shot in the abdomen, and the bullet exited her back. The girl was able to tell police who shot her before she was taken to the hospital.

Police said neither Burrell or the victim were residents of the home where the shooting happened.  They said other adults and children were at the home at the time of the shooting.

Burrell is being charged with aggravated assault, cruelty to children, reckless conduct and marijuana possession.

Riverdale Police are continuing their investigation.
