Both Clayton County and MARTA police gathered in Jonesboro on Thursday to discuss strategies to keep riders safe.

MARTA Police will have a visible presence around transit routes, and Clayton County chairman Jeff Turner says he is confident the new measures will deter criminals from causing trouble.

"We are going to effectively police it," Turner said. "We are going to arrest you if you commit a crime, and we're going to do what needs to be done to protect the citizens of Clayton County."

Clayton County government officials and police believe an increase in crime is likely, nevertheless, 13 MARTA police officers will begin a dedicated patrol of the area starting March 21.
