Police officer dies after being shot in Riverdale

RIVERDALE, Ga. -- A Riverdale police officer shot to death at an apartment complex on Thursday has been identified.

The incident happened at the Villages on the River apartment complex off of Church Street. Officers from Riverdale and Clayton County police departments were serving a no-knock warrant. Police said the suspect ran out of the back door of the apartment and opened fire, striking the Riverdale officer.

A Clayton County officer then shot the suspect.

The officer, identified as Greg Barney, was transported to Southern Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He was taken into surgery, according to Clayton County Fire Battalion Chief David Vasquez. He later died, officials announced.

"He was a heck of an officer," said Mayor Evelyn Winn-Dixon.  "This has been a monumental loss for our city."

Barney was a 25-year veteran of the Riverdale Police Department. He was not wearing a bullet-proof vest, according to Chief Todd Spivey.

Spivey says Barney was a member of his command staff and typically did not wear a bulletproof vest.

Barney was shot in the arm and in the abdomen. Clayton County Police Chief Michael Register said the medical team "worked vigorously to revive him."

Register said his death, "is a loss for everybody."

The officer who died was not a member of the Clayton County Police Department but Register said, "When one officer falls, we all fall."

The suspect was also shot and taken to Atlanta Medical Center, also in critical condition, Vasquez said.

According to authorities on the scene, police were serving a no knock drug warrant at the complex and the officer was shot during the raid.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is taking over the investigation.
