Family of fallen Riverdale police officer: 'We will miss him dearly' | News
RIVERDALE, Ga. -- The family of a Riverdale Police officer killed in the line of duty has released a statement.
Riverdale Police Major Greg Barney was killed Thursday after being shot while assisting officers serve a no-knock warrant at an apartment.
Barney's family issued a statement Friday saying:
"As you can imagine, our hearts are heavy with the sudden passing of our dear Greg. He loved his job and took great pride in protecting and serving the City of Riverdale. We sincerely appreciate all of your prayers, words of encouragement, and reflections. We also thank you for respecting our privacy during this sensitive time. Greg was a great husband, loving father to twin boys and a caring friend. We will miss him dearly."
According to the family, Barney grew up in Lawnside, N.J. He joined the Fire Department there as a junior firefighter and rose to the position of Captain of the ambulance squad. After he relocated to Georgia, he briefly worked as a deputy for the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office before joining the city of Riverdale, where he worked for more than 25 years.
Barney worked as a school resource officer at Riverdale High School. He also served as sergeant, captain and major. In addition, he worked as interim police chief.
He leaves behind a wife, Lisa, and two 15-year-old sons, Robert and Greg.
Flags at the Riverdale Police station were at half-staff in memory of Barney on Friday.
Clarence Brown, a former police officer in New York, said he knew Barney for years.
“I’m at a loss for words, Brown said. "My heart is hurting. I liked Major Barney, he was decent.”
Paul Morgan-Chism said he knew Barney for two decades. They met when his kids played Pee-Wee football.
“We got to be real good friends," Barney said. "I got used to seeing him every weekend for football, he’d be there from sun up to sun down with all the other parents.”
