Fugitive of the Week: Chaz Ballard | News
JONESBORO, Ga. -- Chaz Jensen Ballard is 11Alive's Fugitive of the Week. He's wanted by the Clayton County Police Department and is being hunted by the U.S. Marshals. The 27-year-old Clayton County resident is wanted on outstanding warrants for Felony Murder and Aggravated Assault.
Ballard has been on the run since February 23, 2011. That's when Marshals say Ballard and associate Sing Lee Soun lured 28-year-old James Johnson to the EconoLodge hotel on Upper Riverdale Road in Jonesboro.
They told Johnson they would meet him in Room 220 and sell him drugs. But investigators said it was clear Ballard and Soun had only one intention. "Once inside the hotel room, they proceeded to rob Johnson," said Deputy U.S. Marshal Eric Heinze.
He said Johnson's fate was sealed before he even got to the hotel room. "Ballard and his associate pulled out a handgun and an AK-47 rifle and began to shoot the victim multiple times," Heinze said. "The criminal investigation determined that there was never a planned narcotics transaction, that it was a straight robbery/cold blooded murder."
One week after the murder, Sing Soun was arrested and is being held in the Clayton County jail for trial. Ballard, a career criminal with a record of weapons and aggravated assault charges, is still on our streets.
"We believe he's been all throughout the Clayton County, Atlanta area," Heinze said. "He has friends, family and associates that may be hiding him out."
Ballard has not been forgotten as he becomes the Fugitive of the Week. He is featured on Rowson's Crime Scene with prior fugitives.
U.S. Marshals ask anyone with information about where Ballard is to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477). You can also email the Marshals directly from Rowson's Crime Scene.
