Hampton teacher among finalists for education award

HAMPTON, Ga. -- A first grade teacher at Hampton's Kemp Primary School is among three Georgia finalists for the 2012 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Tonya Pugh is well on her way to receiving the award, which is the highest honor for K-12 math and science teachers in the U.S.

The award is presented to teachers from each of the 50 states, as well as four U.S. jurisdictions. It recognizes educators who develop and implement quality instructional programs that are appropriate for the age levels of the children they teach, yet still enhance student learning.

More than 4,100 teachers have received the honor since the program's inception.
