New show to highlight "great" people in Clayton County Schools

RIVERDALE -- (submitted by Charles White, CCPS) A new television program featuring a familiar face is being added to local television programming. “Hanging with Dr. Hendrix” – a new program airing on Channel 24, the educational access channel for the Comcast Cable Television System – is scheduled to begin airing next week.

“Hanging with Dr. Hendrix” is a show that will highlight great people in Clayton County Public Schools. The program concept was developed and produced by Dr. Douglas Hendrix, CCPS Chief of Human Resources. The first episode will explore the hardships, triumphs, and character of three amazing seniors. Future programs will provide coverage of adults as well as students. All music in the show was written and produced by CCPS students.

The first episode of “Hanging with Dr. Hendrix” is scheduled to air on Monday, March 28, at 7 p.m. on Channel 24, Comcast Cable. The show will then enter the channel’s programming rotation.

Beauty queen seeks to launch seniors pageant

JONESBORO, Ga. -- A group of past and present “Mrs. Senior Georgia” queens, including Jonesboro resident Cindy Day are on a mission.

Participation in the Mrs. Senior Georgia pageant, which is a beauty pageant for women over the age of 60, has been lacking in the number of contestants from across the state in recent years, according to Day.

Smith Elementary students chat with Oceanographers

JONESBORO – (submitted by Cynthia Bohannon-Brow, M.Ed.) The Campus Kids/Eco-Exploring Kids (EE Kids) of Smith Elementary didn't have to travel to New Zealand to speak with the oceanographers aboard the JOIDES Resolution. The oceanographers came to the fourth and fifth graders live via SKYPE video conferencing to discuss their two-month expedition of extinct sea volcanoes called seamounts.

The Smith Elementary EE Kids spent more than two weeks following the blog of Sylvan-Dell Publishing's author Kevin Kurtz. Kurtz visited their school's Saturday tutorial program in December and shared his latest environmental education book titled, A Day on the Mountain.

Flake is noted for her stories that address the challenges African-American youth face as they transition through adolescence. Her finesse in connecting to the feelings and issues that surround students has made her books hugely popular.

JONESBORO – (CCPS) The School Foodservice Industry has been abuzz about First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign.  A component of the “Let’s Move” campaign emphasizes partnerships with Industry Chefs and Instructors to provide Nutrition Education and Hands-On Cooking Classes to teach students how to cook, taste and eat healthy foods.
