Search Continues for Hit-and-Run Suspect

MORROW, GA -- Police are asking for the public's help in tracking down a hit-and-run driver who left a young boy seriously injured.

Investigators believe Alvelardo Franquez was behind the wheel of a Lexus SUV that rear-ended a car carrying 8-year-old Damian Dennis, his brother, his father and a female driver on Sunday.

Morrow Police Captain James P. Callaway says Dennis is now in stable condition and breathing on his own. He has been moved out of intensive care.

Michael Hawkins witnessed the crash on Jonesboro Road and Southlake Plaza Drive. He told police that he saw the driver of the Lexus get out to inspect his car before taking off.

The car was found Monday night on Boca Grande Parkway in Morrow, but police are still searching for the driver.

Anyone who has seen Alvelardo Franquez is asked to call Morrow Police at 770-961-4000 or 770-961-4006.

Republican Candidate for Governor Backtracks on "Open Mind" on Casinos

Atlanta, GA (AP)-- Republican gubernatorial hopeful Nathan Deal is backpedaling on casinos after at least one prominent Christian
conservative activist called to voice concerns.
Deal created a stir when he said earlier this month that he was
willing to keep an "open mind" about the possibility of casinos
in Georgia. This week, Deal spokesman Brian Robinson said the
former congressman from Gainesville "personally opposes casino
gambling" and doesn't believe they're the best way to spur the
state's economy. Robinson wouldn't say whether Deal would sign a
veto a casino bill if one landed on his desk.
The campaign of Deal's opponent, Democrat Roy Barnes, said
Deal's waffling shows he "is too unsteady for the job" of
