McGarrah ES students reenact first Thanksgiving

MORROW, Ga. -- The kindergarten classes at McGarrah Elementary School in Morrow recently got to experience the first Thanksgiving.

The students dressed as pilgrims and Indians, and sat down together Wednesday for a feast of ham, cheese, grapes and other delicacies similar to what was eaten during the actual first Thanksgiving in the 17th century.

"The celebration went really well," McGarrah Elementary medial specialist Suzy Searcy said. "Students were able to understand more about the holiday in class and at the media center. We read and discussed books about the first Thanksgiving."

President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.
